Junior Karate
(ages 8-13)

Karate is the art of self-defense from a standing position. However, here at UMAC, our students also merge their karate studies with a variety of jiu-jitsu skills, giving them a well-rounded martial arts education. In juniors-age karate, students work on mastering self-discipline, honing technique, and growing into leaders as they are rewarded for showing compassion and putting in hard work. Students gain confidence in their abilities through practice, leading kata, new friendships, and through setting and attaining new goals. Ranking up to a new belt is always a big day for our students, who earn them by reaching a little farther and working a little bit harder each day.

OUR MARTIAL ARTS PHILOSOPHY BEGINS WITH VERBAL ASSERTIVENESS TRAINING
One of the most pervasive and damaging forms of bullying is verbal harassment. Gracie Bullyproof is the only kid's Martial Arts program that makes Verbal Assertiveness Training, or as we like to call it "Verbal Jiu-Jitsu," part of it's regular curriculum. We've devised a series of role-playing exercises to teach kids how to identify and manage the common threats associated with verbal harassment and relational bullying. Gracie Bullyproof students learn how to differentiate between "bullying" and "joking," and not only are kids taught how to speak assertively when necessary, but they also learn how to use direct eye contact and confident posture to deter bullies from targeting them.

Hattatsu Ryu is an eclectic martial art system developed after many years of study in arts ranging from Karate, Jujitsu, Judo, Kung Fu,wrestling, boxing and Muay Thai. It is also, just as importantly, an art that incorporates and educates students in psychological self-defense and stresses the importance of physical fitness. The style emphasizes traditional values and work ethics combined with a modern-day approach to self-protection.

THE SYSTEM CAN BE CLASSIFIED AS A PHILOSOPHY MORE THAN A DEFINED GROUP OF MOVEMENTS
It is based on principles rather than a compilation of techniques. This is not to imply that the techniques that make up a system are not important. They are of great magnitude, but they are not enough. The most refined techniques known will be of little use when one does not train with principles, a sound philosophy and a training regimen that allows a person to be physically and mentally capable of handling a situation. Remember that “situations” are not relegated to only physical altercations but also challenges that occur in our everyday lives.

HATTATSU RYU IS A SYSTEM THAT TAKES INTO CONSIDERATION THE DIFFERENT SIZES, AGES, GENDERS, AND PHYSICAL CAPABILITIES OF THE STUDENTS
It is one that offers enough freedom to allow students to learn and excel at their own pace, utilizing their own individual strengths. As the name implies, we are a school of progressive growth. The students are encouraged to always keep an open mind and to explore and educate themselves in all areas of self-improvement, both in and out of the arena of martial arts.

THE SNAKE ON OUR PATCH IS A SYMBOLIC SIGN. IN EASTERN CULTURES, THE SNAKE REPRESENTS FLOWING MOVEMENTS
The snake is formed in the infinity sign to signify that one should always strive toward flowing from one opportunity to the next in a physical, mental and spiritual sense. These opportunities will never stop presenting themselves. We may only choose to stop seeing them.
